Abstract

This presentation offers practical strategies for troubleshooting Linux SMB client issues, leveraging logs, trace points, CIFS proc file system debug files, and cifs-utils. Attendees will learn how to enable extended logs, capture and analyze trace points effectively.
We'll cover locating errors, decoding and analyzing SMB3 Wireshark traces, and using other SMB diagnostics tools to capture diagnostics from the system. Additionally, common SMB errors such as mount failures, open handles, and connectivity issues will be addressed, incorporating insights from traces, logs, CIFS proc file system debug files, and cifs-utils into the troubleshooting process.
Lastly, we will talk about an upcoming eBPF based diagnostics tools project we are working on to capture diagnostics and debug issues in SMB client. Attendees will leave equipped with actionable skills to resolve Linux SMB client issues confidently.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to capture extended SMB client debug logs, trace points and interpret diagnostic data, including SMB Wireshark traces and CIFS proc file system debug files, to diagnose and address Linux SMB client problems.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and resolve common SMB errors such as mount failures, open handles, and connectivity issues using insights from logs, traces, and diagnostic tools.
Upon completion, participants will get an understanding of available diagnostics tools and methods for debugging Linux SMB client.
