According to IDC forecast, global data will almost double in 3 years and 90% of the data generated is unstructured data which comes in many forms such as documents, videos, images, audio, IOT data, etc. The difficulty of managing the different forms of unstructured data exacerbated by myriads of interfaces and technologies in hybrid multi-cloud environments lead to data sprawl which is one of the major pain points for any organization. Uncontrolled data sprawl creates dark data which carries risks and missed opportunities such as storage cost overruns, non-compliance, ransomware and other security breaches, long backups and missed backups, and ROT (redundant, obsolete, trivial) data reduction. In this talk, we will share how we can build a comprehensive smart data management platform based on the open source Crystal project developed by the SODA community to contain data sprawl, uncover potential business risks, unlock optimization opportunities and improve business insights. Crystal is vendor agnostic, and leverages the metadata of files and objects to provide a unified view of data across on-premise, in cloud and at the edge. Organizations can build integrated Crystal solutions for data protection, security, governance, insights and more. Data management has always been vendor biased, with Crystal, we hope to democratize and contribute to standardizing hybrid multi-cloud data management together with the SNIA community.
