Jim Pinkerton

Partner Architect, Storage Solutions Division, Microsoft Corporation

Biography

Jim Pinkerton came to Microsoft in 2000 (from Silicon Graphics), to focus on high speed networking. This resulted in a new standards organization being created (RDMA Consortium) as well as a new working group in the IETF (Remote Direct Data Placement). In parallel Jim led the creation of a general purpose stateful offload architecture in Windows, referred to as "Chimney", which was targeted to a variety of offloads, including TCP, IPSec, SSL, and RDMA. This culminated in shipping the Scalable Networking Pack, which was a high priority for both HP and Dell, among other OEMs. Other offloads which he helped architect include Receive Side Scaling (RSS) and Large Send Offload, version 2.

After 5 years in Windows Core Networking, Jim transitioned into the Windows Core File Systems team and took part in creating the Storage Solutions Division (SSD). He was the main catalyst for the work that resulted in SMB/Client-Side Caching support for the "BrancheCache" feature of Windows (a peer-to-peer caching engine, created by Windows Core Networking). He has also spearheaded the work to move SMB from its traditional role of client focus to be credible as a file serving protocol for mission critical server applications, including Microsoft SQL Server and Hyper-V. This resulted in Windows 7 resilient handles (transparent network fault tolerance) and SMB large PDUs for optimized bulk transfers on 10 gigabit Ethernet. Jim represents protocols related to file storage on the Microsoft architecture review committee as well as to the Samba team and leads the Protocol documentation work for SSD.
